Can anyone elaborate on the performance gains using SSD’s?

I use SATA’s in my ded srvs….and am setting up a new ded srv…

If you need higher i/o or getting high load due to low i/o on server, then use ssd. Really it’s boost server i/o significantly.

SSD’s are really a game changer in today’s industry.. Although just normal SATA’s are fine too. Every host is gearing towards some sort of SSD enhancement and personally we have seen a big increase in performance since we have utilized them in our services.

Thanks for the feedback guys….All I have to go on is my personal workstation with an SSD primary, 32GB RAM, 6 cores, and 2GB GPU…..I must say the SSD is a game changer compared to the CPU, RAM, and GPU….

I will set this ded srv up with a SSD!

SSD is a game changer for sure.

This is esp. true for ****** software that isn’t exactly coded to the best it could be, and then there’s the ****** mysql queries found in a lot of software today. Hardware has been improving so rapidly some developers are leaning on that.

Make sure the endurance of the SSD is up to your task.

I’ve been leasing servers almost 14 years now, and my goal is to get 3-5 years out of each hosting box before it’s replaced.

Checkout enterprise SSD reviews vs consumer. Don’t simply assume a consumer drive with better IO ratings will be better than the Intel enterprise drives in RAID, as i’ve seen a few benchmarks that prove this completely opposite, and the Intel blow the higher IOPs consumer drives away in RAID config.

There one thing that everyone has missed there out, their not mechanical so less chance of them breaking down.

This statement is invalid. The average SSD drive has a Failure Expectancy of 5-6 years, and a lifetime of 10 years. However, newer SATA drives are rated for 800,000 hours (or 100 years) of run time. Another issue to consider is that once an SSD drive does fail, the data on the drive is unrecoverable. On a disk drive, the information can be recovered with the right tools. Using SSD for Caching is one thing, but running mission critical information off the drive without redundancies in place can be disastorous.

Were is the evidence to support your statement that they they only last 5-6 years?

Your having a joke there is no way a normal hard drive will last a 100 years your making this stuff up its hear say most HDD only last 10 years, once again I want proof that they last 100 years not just your hear say and its like saying that tape sounds better than cd but its not true and like tape sata hdd will fade out.

SSD should be a standard when it comes to shared hosting. They may only last 5-6 years but there are methods you can use to increase the longevity of them. If a SSD needs to be replaced, it takes only minutes to resync into raid, rather than 8-10 hours.

As for Vps’s or Dedi’s, then obviously you would order the drive type you would need. Some people need storage space rather than speed. Whenever the situation calls for more space then speed, then SSDs would not be relevant.

Obviously, we know that SSDs still fail, But write-cycle exhaustion isn’t the problem. Sometimes firmware is to blame. I know this because of the firmware updates vendors issue specifically targeting a documented problem. Other failures are electronic in nature. A capacitor or memory IC might go out, taking the SSD with it. Of course their are fewer issues with SSDs than hard drives, which have moving parts that invariably wear out over time.
